Text: Guillaume Trahan; born 1611, Montreuil-BelleyMaine-et-Loire,France.Guillaume, his wife FrancoiseCharbonneau whom hemarried in 1628,twochildren and a hired hand, werepassengers on the ship"Saint-Jehan"in1636. One daughter Jeanne born 1629,the other childpresumably diedasthere is no subsequent record. Guillaumesoon became oneof themostinfluential and highly respected citizens ofPort Royal and hewasalsoone of the most prominent. In the ensuing yearsGuillaumeTrahan'snameshows up among those of authority in Acadia. In1654, thesignaturesonan Act of the surrender of Port Royal included thatofGuillaume,representative of the inhabitants.
Guillaume served as marshal (toolsmith) of Bourgeil, Francethetownwherehe emigrated from. The circumstances that brought Guillaumeandhisfamilyto the new world may never be known. But it could well bethatin1634 asentence had been issued against a group of residents ofthetownandGuillaume's name was among the lot. He was charged andfinedwithillegallycutting wood for his hearth from the private forestof, atopminister ofthe French Government. Persons from various walksoflifewere also listedand fined, including members of theclergy.Guillaume ina second marriageto Madeleine Brun in 1666, duaghterofVincent Brun andRenee Breaux, hehad six children with her.Thismarriage was theresults of all the futureTrahan's in AcadiaandLouisiana.
