master surgeon to sieur d'aulnay. in about 1672, he began anagricultural development which became beaubassin and set up aflour mill there.
founder of beaubassin-- before leaving france, bourgeois hadentered the medical profession. he came to port royal in 1642with 18 families that gov. menou d'aulnay brought with him onone of his voyages. bourgeois's father, also named jacques, wasan army officer at port royal and the brother in law of germaindoucet, sieur de la verdure, aulnay's assistant.
while jacques senior was returned to france, his son remained inacadia where he became the ancestor of a large number ofdescendants. in 1643 he had married jeanne trahan who was bornin france in 1631, they had ten children.
at port royal, jacques became a farmer and shipbuilder. hetraded with the bostonians, particularly with john nelson andwilliam phips. he learned their language and was the interpreterfor the french in their dealings with the english. in 1672, hesold part of his holdings at port royal in order to settle, withhis sons charles and germain, and two of his sons in laws inthe chigneto basin, thus becoming the first promoter ofsettlement in this region. he built a flour mill and a saw millthere. a few years later, in 1676, the region was made into aseigneury, the holder of which was michel leneuf de la valliere(the elder), a nobleman born at trois rivieres, the new fief,100 square leagues in extent, was named beaubassin. aslavalliere brought in settlers and indentured employees fromcanada, two distinct establishments adjoined each other atbeaubassin, but a clause in the title to the land grantprotected the interests of jacques bourgeois and the otheracadian settlers established on the domain. it was not longbefore the 2 elements of the population merged into one.
the distingushed colonist had settled at port royal again before1699. he died there, an octogenarian, in 1701. the family namewas perpetuated by 2 of his three sons, charles and germain. in1682 the third son guillaume left only a daughter.
