What is a “GEDCOM” file?

A "GEDCOM" is a file generated by a family tree program that allows genealogists, historians, and other researchers to share genealogical information. GEDCOM is an acronym for "GE"nealogical "D"ata "COM"munication. What is “WFT” or “WFT est.”, and what does it mean?

WFT simply means "World Family Tree", the name given to the CD-ROMs sold by Broderbund that contain genealogical information. For example: "1750-1849 WFT est. " means that the exact date is not known, but it is an estimate (created by Broderbund) based on dates given that relate to this person. This could mean that a date is known for the birth of a descendant and based on the assumption that there is 20-30 years between generations; this would put the birth of the original person between those years.
