  IMPORT / EXPORT

I am interested in switching to Family Tree Legends from another genealogy software program? Can I move my existing family file to your software without losing any information?

Yes, Family Tree Legends can import the popular .GED (Gedcom), and .FTW (Family Tree Maker) file formats with out losing any information. Almost every major genealogy software program supports the ability to export a .GED (Gedcom) file.

For additional information on how to move your data from another program to Family Tree Legends, please see:

What file formats can my Family Tree Legends file be exported to?

Family Tree Legends files can be export to the standard .GED (Gedcom) file format. You can choose to create a full export, selective export, and also to limit information on living/private individuals.

To do so, choose "FILE > EXPORT TO GEDCOM FILE".

Can I merge another file with my existing Family Tree Legends file?

Yes, you can merge any .GED (Gedcom) file with any existing Family Tree Legends file. To do so, choose "FILE > MERGE FROM GEDCOM FILE". After the file has been merged, you can select "EDIT > FIND DUPLICATES" to find and merge duplicate individuals that appear in your file.

I merged a GEDCOM file into my existing Family Tree Legends file, and then used the Find Duplicates feature to merge the duplicates resulting from this process. Now, I find that several of the individuals in my file, have the same spouse listed more than once. How do I remove these duplications?

If you are encountering multiple instances of the same marriage you will need to detach all but one of the instances. There is no need to permanently delete an individual. While viewing an individual's home page (where duplicate marriages are occurring), click on their "spouse" icon. This will bring up a window labeled "Spouses" and subtitled "Spouses of John Doe". Highlight each of the extra / duplicated spouses, and click the button labeled "detach". You will need to do this for each instance where the multiple marriages are occurring.
