• What is Real-Time Internet Backup?
Family Tree Legends’ Real-Time Internet Backup is an integrated feature to provide you peace-of-mind when working with you family history. What would be worse than spending hours of your life compiling information only to have it destroyed by a virus, a cup of spilled water, or any other computer disaster? Utilizing secured servers and the same level of encryption (128-bit) used by online banks and credit card companies; Family Tree Legends can securely and safely back-up your file in the event that something goes wrong with your computer. This feature can be turned on or off according to how you configure Family Tree Legends.
It is important to note, that in order to utilize the SmartMatching feature of Family Tree Legends, you will need to enable "Real-Time Internet Backup" for your file.
• How do I enable Internet Backup?
To do so, please try the following: Open Family Tree Legends while connected to the Internet, open your file and select OPTIONS > FILE OPTIONS. Now select the tab labeled "Internet Backup". You can choose enable Real-Time Internet Backup by selecting "Yes, enable...". When you are finished, click the "OK" button to close the File Options window. This will begin the file backup process: please remain on-line to allow the file to fully transfer. The program should prompt you for your GenCircles username and password.
• How do I disable Internet Backup?
Open Family Tree Legends, open your file, and select OPTIONS > FILE OPTIONS. Now select the tab labeled "Internet Backup". You can disable Real-Time Internet Backup by choosing the option “No, I do not…”. When you are finished, click the "OK" button to close the File Options window.
• What is Real-Time Internet Publishing?
Family Tree Legends’ Real-Time Internet Publishing is an integrated feature to quickly synchronize your family history with an online version available at GenCircles.com. Rather than constantly saving and uploading your file, Family Tree Legends will automatically synchronize changes you make in the program with your GenCirlces.com webpage. This feature is optional, and can be turned on or off in the “OPTIONS > FILE OPTIONS” menu of Family Tree Legends.
• How do I enable Internet Publishing?
In order to publish your file on the GenCircles web site, you must enable "Real-Time Internet Publishing" and "Real-Time Internet Backup" for your file.
To do so, please try the following: Open Family Tree Legends while connected to the Internet, open your file and select OPTIONS > FILE OPTIONS. Now select the tab labeled "Internet Backup". You can choose enable Real-Time Internet Backup by selecting "Yes, enable...". Now, you click on the "Internet Publishing" tab. You can choose enable Real-Time Internet Publishing by selecting "Yes, enable...". When you are finished, click the "OK" button to close the File Options window. This will begin the publishing process: please remain on-line to allow the file to fully publish. The program should prompt you for a file name, and your GenCircles username and password.
• How do I disable Internet Publishing?

• I just enabled the Internet Publishing and/or the Internet Backup feature(s), and Family Tree Legends is prompting me for a username and password. Where do I find my username and password?
Registration at the GenCircles web site is required to use the "Real Time Internet Backup", and "Real Time Internet Publishing" features of Family Tree Legends. We do not automatically register Family Tree Legends users at the GenCircles web site, or assign them a username or password. If you have not yet registered at the GenCircles web site, or would like to create a new username and password, Family Tree Legends provides you with the opportunity to sign up at any time by accessing the "OPTIONS > FILE OPTIONS" menu in the software.
Please open Family Tree Legends, and choose "OPTIONS > FILE OPTIONS > INTERNET BACKUP or PUBLISHING". By choosing, "Yes, enable..." for either of these options, you will be prompted to enter your GenCircles username and password (if you already have one) or to register, or to create a new account at the GenCircles web site. Choose "No, please take me to the registration form" - this will open the "Register with GenCircles" window. There are several fields you must complete to register with the GenCircles web site:
- Your Name - enter your full name.
- Your Email - enter your email address. This email address will only be used by GenCircles to communicate with you about your account.
- Username - enter a username. This username will represent the URL.
(http://www.gencircles.com/users/USERNAME) when people are searching for your family history. You will use this username to access your GenCircles account. Usernames can contain a maximum of 15 characters (only letters, numbers, and dashes please. Literal spaces are not accepted.)
- Password - enter a case-sensitive password. This password will be used with your username to access your GenCircles account. Password can contain a maximum of 15 characters (only letters, numbers, and dashes please.). All passwords are case-SENSITIVE!
Click the "OK" button to commit your desired login information, and to complete the GenCircles web site registration process. Please take note of your new GenCircles account login information (username & password) so that you can refer to it again a later time.

• I am a dial-up modem user, and have recently switched Internet providers. Family Tree Legends is no longer publishing, and/or backing up my file because it can’t connect to the Internet. How do I fix this?
In order to change the dial-up internet connection associated with Family Tree Legends:
- You will need to select the menu labeled "Options", and then choose "Program Options".
- When the Program Options window appears, choose the "Internet" tab.
- On the Internet tab, make sure that "Dial-up" is selected, and click on the "Advanced" button.
- You will now be presented with the Advanced Modem Options window.
- Use the drop down menu to choose the correct Internet connection.
- Also, make sure that "Enable Modem Connection Log File" is checked.
- Click "OK" to commit the changes.
- Next, you can restart Family Tree Legends, and test your internet connection by choosing the "Internet" menu and choosing "View Your File at GenCircles" option.
• Family Tree Legends has suddenly stopped publishing updates, or is publishing erroneous data to the GenCircles web site. I have not switched Internet providers, and don’t receive an error message. What can I do to fix this?
You may need to "jump start" your file and re-publish it to the GenCircles web site to correct this issue. Please try the following:
- While connected to the Internet, open your file in Family Tree Legends and select OPTIONS > FILE OPTIONS.
- Next click on the Internet Backup tab, and choose to disable Real-Time Internet BACKUP by selecting "No do not enable", then click "OK" to close the File Options window.
- Next re-open OPTIONS > FILE OPTIONS window and choose to enable both Real-Time Internet BACKUP and Real-Time Internet PUBLISHING by selecting "Yes, enable" for both options. You will need to re-enter your GenCircles password.
- When you are finished, click "OK" to close the File Options window. This will restart the publishing/backup process: please remain on-line to allow the file to fully publish.
- The program should prompt you for a file name, and your GenCircles password. Your SmartMatches for this file should be available again between 24 and 96 hours after you complete this process.
• I have read on the GenCircles web site that I can update my published file by clicking on the “Update” button on the “My GenCircles” page. When I view the “My GenCircles” page I only see a message that my file is handled by Family Tree Legends, and don’t see a button labeled “Update”. How do I update my file?
If you have enabled the Real-Time Internet Publishing feature, your file is being automatically published and updated to the GenCircles web site by the Family Tree Legends software on your computer. Only manually uploaded GEDCOM files have the "Update" option available on the web site.
Our Real-Time Internet Publishing feature built in to Family Tree Legends transmits your new or modified data to our server when the program starts up, and then at regular intervals while the program is running and you are actively connected to the Internet. If there is information that was not transmitted before the software is shutdown, it will be uploaded the next time the program starts up and you are connected to the Internet.
