Description:

Birth certificates represent one of the key primary sources for family information, typically being issued within days of a birth and containing the parents’ names at a minimum. Many times they contain additional parental details including places of birth, ages, and number of children. Prior to children being born in hospitals, home addresses were noted which is an important fact to understanding where they lived.

Availability of birth records in the United States varies, but most states began requiring them by the early 1900s. In many cases, such as New York, records are available as early as the 1840s. Accessing individual records can be difficult without knowing when a person was born; therefore indexes to birth records are essential in simplifying your search. Most indexes provide a year and certificate number, which allows you to easily access the source document.
