Wills are documents created by individuals to determine how their assets will be divided after they die. While wills have never been required by states or federal institutions, most individuals that had assets were sure to make it known what to do with their money, land or other goods when they passed away. These documents are often the most useful in determining relationships among family members or facts about assets such as land an individual owned. In many cases, they mention the homeland where an individual was born as well as any relatives that may still reside there. In many cases, wills are accompanied by probate records which the courts used to execute the desires of the deceased individual or to contest their requests.
Wills and probate records are some of the earliest records on file. They date back in the United States to the early 1600s, but were not required until the mid 1900s in many states. If a person had many assets, you can bet that they either left a will or their estate will have probate records for them. Accessing indexes to the probate records can make finding them much easier and usually link to a year, file and document number.
