Probate records are those related to resolution of a person’s estate after they die. Consequently, they include either a will or documents substituting this when a will was not left. These documents are often the most useful in determining relationships among family members or facts about assets such as land an individual owned. In many cases, they mention the homeland where an individual was born as well as any relatives that may still reside there. The more an estate was debated, the more documents that usually exist -- therefore the more information that is available about the person and family.
Wills and probate records are some of the earliest records on file. They date back in the United States to the early 1600s, but were not required until the mid 1900s in many states. If a person had many assets, you can bet that they either left a will or their estate will have probate records for them. Accessing indexes to the probate records can make finding them much easier and usually link to a year, file and document number.
